Small business owners face countless challenges and in the current climate, many are either having to focus their efforts on keeping afloat, or they’re furiously adapting in order to get ahead of the frequent changes that are sweeping in from every direction.

Combined with the pressure of being the only person responsible for all the decision making and the added worries of hiring, motivating and parting ways with employees…. it all adds up to what can feel like a lonely business. This can lead to sleepless nights, a fear of making decisions, loneliness, depression, anxiety and potentially serious illness.

In the corporate world, CEOs and their leadership teams often have access to a senior HR confidante, someone with whom they can be completely open about their anxieties, doubts and frustrations, without the added fear of judgment – someone who can help them reach decisions and work through the issues they are facing.  It can be helpful to have an objective advisor to give perspective.

Many of the business owners I work with initially come to me with a specific issue that they need help with. Very often, however, my support evolves in to filling the role of the HR confidante, not least because I also run my own business and therefore understand the pressures of small business ownership.

We all need someone to talk to who can offer a balanced perspective. Well-meaning family and friends will always want the best for you but might not be the best placed to offer impartial advice. It’s also vital that the advice you are getting is correct – following the wrong path could end up costing you in the long run.
